TARA Keeps Up With Politics

TARA AUSTIN LEARNS ABOUT HEALTHY TEXAS

The TARA Austin chapter recently heard speaker Laura Ehrlich, Executive Director for JimHightower, speaking about the Healthy Texas Act which will guarantee that every resident of Texas will receive comprehensive healthcare services. Covered benefits will include services to keep people healthy mentally and physically, as well as those services that diagnose and treat illness and various conditions. Rep. Gina Hinojosa of Austin filed HB 4127 during this legislative session to provide these healthcare services. It was left pending in committee in April. Members heard that work on the Healthy Texas Act will continue.

HOUSTON TARA PRESIDENT ATTENDS POLITICAL BOOT CAMP

Last week, Houston TARA President and retired teacher Cheryl Anderson traveled to Philadelphia and participated in a Political Boot Camp Training. The AFT Political and Legislative Departments trained participants in how to assist in running a political campaign. Quite a few of the participants were retirees from New York, Texas, Nevada, and other AFT activists. Cheryl Anderson is also the Chair of the Texas AFT Retiree Plus Committee. She says, “The training was very intense as well as exciting.” Cheryl is shown below right with Nevada ARA/AFT Activist Sue Bird.
