Write Your Friends!
Grace Akbar tells Dallas activists that they need to outreach everybody they know to organize our progressive movement.
She and friend Ethel Castaneda, both retired schoolteachers, wrote up a model letter that could be copied and sent around:
Greetings Fellow Citizens,
Potential changes resulting from the 2016 election threaten the very quality of our way of life:
1. Replacing the current Medicare System for a voucher program as proposed by House Speaker Paul Ryan
2. Gutting Medicaid
3. Dismantling Defined Retirement Benefits
4. Shifting money from public schools in favor of vouchers
WE MUST pool our resources and energy to protect our wellbeing and our nation’s. As Albert Einstein reminded us, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”
What can YOU do?
Know your elected representatives and their views on the issues. Only 35% of people in polls know the names of their congressional representatives.
Google “Who Represents Me” and enter your address. You’ll get a list of your national and state senators and representatives, their phone numbers and addresses. Click their names to get their websites. Read about the issues that matter to them. Write a message about your concerns; they usually have a “contact me” link to their email.
Visit your congress persons’ offices, introduce yourself and express your concerns.
Call local, state/national offices to articulate your concerns and preferences.
Write letters to your congressmen, and the president.
Sign petitions from AARP that advocate the issues you support.
