COASTAL BEND TARA CHAPTER ELECTS NEW OFFICERS
At their recent meeting, the Coastal Bend Chapter elected new officers Kina Pena-President, Leticia Valentine-Vice President and Tommie Hernandez-Secretary. President Penareported that they heard awesome speakers Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Delgado from the Social Security Administration. She says, “We now have handouts and booklets with information on Social Security Benefits and laws.” She shared the new ARA Fact Sheets on Social Security and Medicare and Social Security Expansion. Members signed the Social Security Expansion Petition.
Kudos to long time Coastal Bend TARA Activist and SOAR TARA Executive Board Member Andy Rosas who was recently notified by SOAR Director Julie Stein that he had been named the District 13 SOAR Coordinator and Executive Board member to fill the unexpired term of John Patrick. Brother Rosas was chosen for this position by the USW International President Leo Gerard, in consultation with District 13 Director Ruben Garza.
TARA MEMBERS TO JOIN TEXAS AFT AND TSEU LOBBY DAYS
TARA members will join with Texas AFT on Monday, March 11 for the Red for Ed March To The Capitol, plus we will have information to share with legislators about issues affecting all retirees, in addition to those in the education community. We must stick together with both active and retired employees in all occupations, as the powers that be often want to pit us against each other. We will not let that happen. If you plan to attend Lobby Day on March 11, you will travel on a bus from locals around the state, have lunch at the Capitol and Rally on the South Steps at 12. If you wish to register, please go to www.texasaft.org for more information.
Joe Montemayor and Anitra Patterson of the Texas State Employees Union, or TSEU, shared this information about their Lobby Day set for Wednesday, April 10, 2019. We will again be lobbying our legislators about issues affecting current and retired workers. If you wish to attend, the cost is $20, non-refundable, which covers transportation and food. They have a website that can be used to purchase- reserve seats on the buses which will leave from main Texas cities. Click on this link to register.
