Voter Registration Is Critical!

Registering voters and motivating them to vote is an essential part of the retiree movement in Texas. State Organizer Judy Bryant led the way in Dallas this year, while Austin Chapter President Glenn Scott made sure we were effective in the state capital. We encouraged all chapters and activists to participate in voter registration. A lot of them, like Dallas Chapter President George Nolan, didn’t have to be asked because they were already throwing themselves into the work.

Dallas TARA Deputy Voter Registrars worked in three locations at the CC Young Retirement Center on National Voter Registration Day. Seniors and staff completed new and change of address voter registration apps and also applied for mail ballots. Barbara and Fernando Rojas, Eddie Morgan, George Nolan, Beverly McCray and Judy Bryant assisted residents.

If retirees hope to vote-by-mail in this year’s Constitutional Amendment election, they will have to ask for vote-by-mail status from their local election board or the Secretary of State, unless they had achieved the status earlier. People who qualify for vote-by-mail must apply once each year, so Judy Bryant says that Texas Alliance activists will have to conduct a campaign in January, 2016, to get people signed up to vote by mail during all of next year’s critical elections.
