Our Winning Side Gets a Victory

Texas Alliance for Retired Americans joined the fight for fair trade

On January 31, TARA joined in a big rally and march that began at Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas. We were opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the “fast track” legislation that helps grease secret unfair trade deals through Congress. For many years, activists have been opposing these secret pacts on the grounds that they take away jobs and spoil the environment. Union members and environmentalists make up the bulk of the forces on our side. This year, seniors joined the fight because the the cost and access to pharmaceuticals would have been affected.

On that same day, Senate Leader Harry Reid announced his opposition to “fast track” and the coming legislation. Before the week was out, another top Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, announced her opposition. Then on February 13, Vice President Joe Biden told news reporters that this Congress will not act on “fast track” nor “free trade.” It was a major victory for everybody. If the 2014 elections go all right for seniors, we can put that one worry aside!
