Dallas Medicare/Medicaid Action is Next
Celebrate, Defend, and Expand Medicare/ Medicaid!
- 12:30 PM July 30, 50th Anniversary of Medicare signing
- 334 Centre (At Bishop)
- Dallas, Texas 75208
Mayor Pro Tem Monica Alonzo will lead a program of information and music leading to a firm commitment to support Medicare/Medicaid in the face of Congressional intent to cut Medicaid and privatize Medicare. We will urge the state of Texas to stop stonewalling on expanding Medicaid and allow more than a million of the poorest Texans to have health care under provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
Because we recognize the critical situation facing Medicare/Medicaid in America, the national Alliance for Retired Americans is taking part in 90 nationwide events. Three of them were in Texas: Austin, Dallas, and Hurst.
The City of Dallas is expected to issue a special proclamation recognizing the great importance of July 30, 1965, when President Johnson signed the Medicare bill and credited retiree organizations with having created the political climate for it. The version of the resolution that TARA submitted said:
“Resolution Recognizing Medicare on Its 50th Anniversary
WHEREAS, Medicare was signed on by President Lyndon B Johnson on July 30, 1965; and
WHEREAS, President Johnson credited the National Committee for Senior Citizens, later replaced by the Alliance for Retired Americans, with organizing nationwide support for Medicare; and
WHEREAS, millions of seniors living in the Dallas area have benefited from free or low-cost medical care; and
WHEREAS, millions have benefited from the provisions of Medicaid, which is part of Medicare; and
WHEREAS, The City of Dallas remains committed to good health for every one of our citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL S. RAWLINGS, mayor of the city of Dallas, and on behalf of the Dallas City Council, on Friday, July 24, 2015, do hereby extend special recognition to MEDICARE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY in celebration of 50 years of service and support to Dallas area seniors, the poor, and their families.”
Let’s re-commit ourselves to preserving and expanding Medicare!
Thanks
