TARA Chapters Celebrate Older Americans Month

The Houston TARA Chapter met on Wednesday, May 2 , to celebrate Older Americans Month at the Dinner Bell Cafe. Andy Hardwick, from the Social Security Administration, spoke about Social Security Benefits, the WEP offset and how that impacts TRS Pensions. He encouraged members to apply pressure to Congressman Kevin Brady from the Woodlands about repealing WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision). Plans were made to attend the May 19 Speak out for Education at Discovery Green in Houston.

The Dallas TARA Chapter kicked off Older Americans Month by meeting early for lunch and fellowship. President George Nolan introduced candidates for the Texas House of Representatives who had completed the TARA 2018 Candidate Survey. Rhetta Bowers, District 113, and Brandy Chambers, District 112, expressed strong support of public education, more affordable health care for active and retired educators, and all public pensions. They also stressed a need for more affordable senior housing across the state. Field Organizer Judy Bryant shared important information from the ARA during an Older Americans Month presentation, including fact sheets. Members signed petitions and discussed scheduling Lobby Visits to members of Congress during May. They ended the meeting enjoying a special cake made by member Beverly McCray.
